To hire employees in Jordan, employers have to follow the employment law of the country. Below is the brief about the same.

Employment Contract

There are two types of employment contracts in Jordan – Indefinite and fixed-term. The employment contracts must be in the Arabic language. If the employee is a foreigner, the signed translated copy of the contract should be attached with the Arabic contract.

Probation Period

The employer can hire employees under probation for a maximum of three months.

Overtime pay

The standard working hours in Jordan are 48 hours for a six-day workweek. However, employees working in hotels, restaurants and cinema must work for 54 hours per week. Full-time employees are entitled to overtime pay for additional working hours exceeding 48 hours a week at 125% of their actual wage. The overtime pay for public holidays and rest days is 150% above the normal wage.

Employee offboarding

A fixed-term employment contract cannot be terminated by either party. It expires on its own.
Both parties can terminate the indefinite employment contract by giving notice in writing. In case of gross misconduct, both parties can leave the employment without notice also.

The party that initiates the termination process needs to give 30 months’ notice.

In Jordan, the severance pay is up to three months of compensation in case of illegal dismissal.
