Types of Russia Work Permits Available

The process of getting a work visa for Russia is complex due to the strict laws. Foreign nationals coming to work in Russia must have both a work permit and a work visa.

Work Visa:

Also called an Employment Visa, it allows foreigners to work in Russia. It is a single-entry visa valid for 90 days. A multiple-entry visa is issued for a maximum validity of one year, although it can be extended for up to three years.

Highly Skilled Migrant Visa:

A special category for professionals earning over RUB 1 million annually. It is valid for three years and enables the holder to bring family members.
2024 Update: Processing times for this visa have been accelerated, and applications can now be submitted electronically.

Requirements for a Russia Work Permit by Russian Employers

The Russian employer initiates the first step in getting a work visa. The process involves several steps:

  1. Apply to the Government Employment Service for a foreign labor quota.
  2. Submit company information and tax registration documents.
  3. Obtain the necessary work permit from the Directorate of Migratory Affairs.
  4. Extend the official invitation to the foreign employee.

Employers are now required to submit quarterly reports on the salaries of highly skilled professionals.

Requirements for a Russia Work Permit by Russian Employees

Employees should have an invitation from the Russian company. Depending on the visa type, general document requirements include:

  • A Russian work visa invitation letter from your employer.
  • Employment letter detailing the job role and responsibilities.
  • Original passport.
  • Completed work visa application form.
  • Two passport-sized photographs.
  • Proof of health insurance from a Russian company.
  • HIV Test Certificate (required for students and work visa applicants).

Employees must now submit documents through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ electronic platform.

Russia Work Permit Application Process

To start the process:

  1. Obtain a work visa invitation from your employer.
  2. Fill out the application form on the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
  3. Collect the necessary documents, including your passport and employment contract.
  4. Submit the documents at the Russian consulate and pay the required visa fees.

Timeframe for Russia Work Permit

The processing time for a Russian work visa typically takes 10-20 days, depending on your profession and visa type. It can be expedited to 3 days for urgent cases authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Work Permit Exceptions

The following groups are exempt from needing a Russian work visa:

  • Foreign nationals with a permanent residence permit in Russia.
  • Diplomatic employees and consular workers.
  • Journalists accredited in Russia.
  • Foreign employees performing installation, repair, or servicing work.

In 2024, new exemptions have been introduced for certain educational roles and workers in installation services.
